Medigold high potency phytoactive
honey
For thousands of years the indigenous people of the
world have known and used active honey for its beneficial properties
and only recently has science been able to explain why active honeys
are of such benefit.
Tested in laboratories for evidence of
their beneficial effects and graded accordingly to their strengths,
Medigold active honeys are a vital addition to any medicine
cabinet.
This pure honey is sourced from selected
Leptospermum plants growing in the unspoilt forest environments of
Australia and New Zealand.
This honey is cold extracted and
processed differently to other honeys to help preserve and maintain
its beneficial properties and active enzymes.
The Medicinal Honey Company specialises in the
manufacture of high quality honey-based products using natures
precious gift of active honeys. We believe the future will reveal
many vital uses for this unique product and our commitment to
research at the highest university level will ensure that we remain
at the forefront of developments in this area.
We harvest
active Leptospermum honey from our own beehives and also
source this unique honey from beekeepers on the north coast of
New South Wales in Australia and from the wilderness of New
Zealand’s South Island. In this way we can be sure of the quality
and purity of the honey used in our
products.
Activity of Leptospermum Honey
‘Active' or ‘phytoactive’ refers to the unique and special
phytochemical properties only found in Leptospermum or tea tree
honeys. There are two types of ‘activity' present in these
unique Leptospermum honeys, both of which are determined by
specific, independent laboratory tests:
1. Hydrogen
Peroxide Activity The hydrogen peroxide activity is
found in a few honeys world wide, however it is generally very high
in both the active Australian Tea Tree (L. polygalifolium) and
active organic Manuka (L. scoparium). It is the most common form of
activity which is enabled by the presence of an enzyme called
‘glucose oxidase’ which is present in these honeys. 2.
Non-Hydrogen Peroxide Activity or Unique Phytoactivity (also known
as the Unique Manuka Factor). So far researchers world
wide have not been able to identify the specific compounds
responsible for this unique phytoactive property, however the
beneficial effects have been scientifically graded according to
strength from 10+ to 20+. It is known that the unique phytoactive
component is more stable than the hydrogen peroxide releasing enzyme
activity in that it is not affected by dilution and is therefore
better suited for longer term use.
Tested to ensure high levels of
activity
Some Leptospermum honeys contain both types
of activity combining the benefits of both the hydrogen peroxide
activity as well as non-hydrogen peroxide activity (Unique
Phytoactivity). Australia and New Zealand Leptospermum Honeys
that have been tested for the unique phytoactivity, carry a symbol
of 10+, 12+, 15+, 18+ or 20+. Honeys which have been tested and
contain both types of activity are more effective and
preferable to honey that has not undergone laboratory testing.
Active Tea Tree honey is cold extracted and processed differently to
other honeys, ensuring that the unique phytoactivity and special
enzymes are preserved Australian Tea Trees or
“jellybush”.
Tea trees belong to the Leptospermum genus which
is a part of the larger Myrtle family. Within the Leptospermum genus
there are 79 species found throughout Australia. Of these only
Manuka, is common to both Australia and New Zealand.
Australian Tea Tree honey (Leptospermum Polygalifolium) is
Australia's answer to Manuka honey from New Zealand. Also known as
“Jellybush”, because of the honey’s gel-like characteristics, this
plant is widely distributed within New South Wales and Queensland
and produces honey that has exceptionally high levels of
phytoactivity.
Like Manuka, activity strength varies
according to location, the strongest being found in north eastern
New South Wales, where The Medicinal Honey Company is
located.
Medigold products contain natural ingredients with
no artificial additives, colours or fragrances. All our products are
made from natural plant derived ingredients and are mildly
formulated for sensitive skin types.
